"A Psychic Wound" by Los Campesinos!
DV:
Watching Los Campesinos! on their recent US tour, I got hung up on the unique path they've taken through my affections: I loved "International TweeXcore Underground" (which apparently has a video that is a real fucking time capsule) in 2007, but I care a lot more about them as a band now then I did back then - it's like they burrowed their way into my head over the past 17 years without me ever quite noticing. And to be clear about bands I loved in 2007: I saw of Montreal recently; I'll be thrilled if Spiritualized play Chicago again. But seeing them is like catching up with an old friend who I don't have all that much in common with any more. Meanwhile there are Los Campesinos lyrics about my life, about my friends, about my partner! I'm not sure how that happened but it did.
And so Los Camp sound and feel more vital to me now than they did back when I first heard them, and I don't think there's any other artist I can say that about. (Admittedly there's very few artists who have been active since the mid-2000s that you can't describe as "nostalgia acts" at this point - if they're even trying to make new music at all.) So that's what makes LC significant: I've long since lost track of artists whose every word I hung on in 2007, but something like "A Psychic Wound" feels real even now that I can't grow long indie bangs if I wanted to. And maybe the production is a little too sleek, but a lyric like "It’s a cosmic check you never cashed/ Curse the universe for what you lack" is the kind of casually-dropped gem that few bands can manage once in their early days, let alone this far into their run. "A Psychic Wound" makes me wonder if Los Camp maybe will keep going forever, and if maybe they'll be the only band in history where that isn't a mistake. Most importantly, the song sounds like a singalong even before it's over.
MG:
DV and I have seen Los Campesinos! a handful of times over their career and most of those times I had one foot out the door only to be completely charmed by the group's all-in ecstasy. Until this last show I'd say Los Campesinos! were a band best experienced live -- mostly because aside from one brief period during lockdown, I don't listen to their records and this is what creates the little cycle of bliss to indifference in which I swirl. In fact, they are a nostalgia act to me, in that I want every concert to reproduce the same sense of fun and belonging the last concert did. I don't want to like my own sense of nostalgia but I also firmly believe we have no free will in this universe, so alas, here I was, very excited for this most recent concert and totally unaware that Los Campesinos! had gone through some sort of internet-led glow up. Things were going pretty much fine until, in the middle of the show, they acknowledged their newfound popularity and conducted a "marketing survey" where they tested whether or not you became a fan during the nascent days of social media or during its ongoing imperial phase. That's when they completely lost me. What a weirdly pro-Capitalist stance to be one of the few bands capable of maintaining your recording and touring artist career for almost two decades but to only feel successful once you can properly advertise. "A Psychic Wound" does everything a Los Campesinos! song should. It's full of witty lyrics and a chaos of instruments all delivered with a righteous enthusiasm. But now it just gets on my nerves.

346: Various Artists // What Now, People? 2
What Now, People? 2 Various Artists 1977, Paredon
Paredon was an activist record label founded in 1969 that specialized in protest music, largely American acoustic folk with a good helping of releases by international leftist artists. Inspired by the Cuban Revolution and the model of “People’s Singers” like Joe Hill and Pete Seeger, Paredon put out about 50 releases over their 20ish years in operation. The mid-‘70s compilation series What Now, People? (three volumes between 1976 and 1977) was a musical magazine intended to stimulate development of new protest songs for marches, rallies, labour meetings, etc. by providing complete lyrics, chords, and commentary from contemporary folk singers.
The back of the included booklet asks the purchaser to mail back a “political record review” in the form of a questionnaire. It’s a little late for me to field questions 7 through 9, which concern suggesting record stores and radical organizations who might be interested in carrying Paredon stock, but I’ll do my best with the others.
youtube
1. HOW DID YOU FIRST HEAR ABOUT THIS RECORD?
I found a copy of it in the used section of Phonopolis Records, on Rue Bernard, Mile End, Montreal, Quebec in 2021.
2. WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION TO IT POLITICALLY?
I have always liked the “musical magazine” concept, and the notion of making a body of political songs accessible for people to not only listen to but learn how to play themselves (in the manner of The IWW Songbook) is very cool. On a level of pure politics, it’s hard to disagree with the lyrics’ notions that America must become more egalitarian or it will consume itself morally, environmentally, socially, and psychically. (Thankfully this is no longer a problem today.)
I’m not sure the emphasis on ‘60s-style folk was the strongest tact however. The late ‘70s was an era with no shortage of powerful protest music, but this collection largely eschews R&B and even rock (with apologies to Red Shadows’ limp Chuck Berry rewrite “Anything Good”). While the veteran Seeger’s “If a Revolution Comes to My Country” grapples with both the promise and challenge of political change in an immediate way, the efforts of the lesser-knowns mostly feel like they’re roleplaying as the firebrands of a prior era. The most genuinely “revolutionary” sounding pieces are those that come from outside the coffee shop scene, like Cuban Amaury Pérez Vidal’s ode to Puerto Rican independence “Siempre con Puerto Rico” and Dakota Sioux activist Floyd Westerman’s “B.I.A.” song—perhaps because these artists had much more direct connections with revolutionary political movements than most of the whites here.
3. WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE BOOKLET?
Fantastic. It’s a great and in some ways inspiring souvenir of the era, and I wish more artists would include the chords and lyrics to their songs.
4. HOW HAVE YOU USED THIS RECORD?
I don’t believe that What Now, People? 2 would be of much use at a contemporary organizing meeting or rally, so largely for scholarly interest; for enjoyment of some pretty folk numbers (Dee Werner, Dorie Ellzey); for yet another reminder of the circularity of political struggle.
youtube
5. WHAT OTHER RECORDS SHOULD BE MADE?
Paredon’s focus on bringing (at the time) difficult to find foreign artists to American audiences will stand as their greatest aesthetic achievement, and I wouldn’t have been upset if there were more. Perhaps some more overtures to Black activists and musicians might’ve led to a more dynamic result with this record in particular.
6. WHAT NOW, PEOPLE?
There is no shortage of protests to go to, letters to write, plans to make. Hopefully we’ll see each other out there, with songs in our hearts.

liora d'aubigny
NAME. Liora D'aubigny
AGE. 28/48
BIRTHDAY. September 23rd
ZODIAC SIGN. Libra
BIRTHPLACE. Montreal, Canada
PLACE OF LIVING: nomad, travelling for cases
ETHNICITY. French, Canadian
ALLIGNMENT. lawful good
OCCUPATION. psychic medium, seer
GENDER. female
PRONOUNS. she/her
SEXUALITY. pansexual
FAMILY. all killed by demons, all gifted
RELATIONSHIP. single, later married to henry (verse dependent)
PHYSICAL,
Liora stands at 174 cm (5'8"), with a delicate yet well-trained build, embodying both strength and grace. Her golden-brown hair, often styled in soft waves, carries a hint of warmth from the sun, a reminder of the calm aura she exudes. Her hazel brown eyes seem to pierce through the world, always perceptive, always searching for the good in others. There’s a soft, ethereal glow to her presence, and her scent is a blend of burned sugar, sandalwood, and thyme—a soothing, almost comforting aroma to those around her.
PERSONALITY.
Liora is an inherently gentle and empathic soul. She has an uncanny ability to see the best in people, no matter how flawed they might be, which makes her an extraordinary medium. Her sensitivity to the emotions of others allows her to understand their deepest fears, desires, and struggles. Liora never judges and will always extend compassion to anyone in need, yet she is not naive—she knows the depths of darkness that exist in the world and will take swift action to protect those she loves. Despite her kindness, she possesses a fierce resolve to protect the innocent, fully aware of the darkness in the world. Her painful past has made her resilient and wise, instilling an unwavering sense of justice. She would never harm the innocent, but she is fully prepared to destroy any evil creature that threatens them.
BACKGROUND. Born into a family of powerful psychic mediums, Liora was raised in a legacy of mysticism and spirituality. From a young age, she was attuned to the spirit world, able to communicate with the dead, sense emotions, and forewarn of dangers ahead. Her family, the D'Aubignys, were known for their purity of heart and their unique ability to guide lost souls into the afterlife. But their gifts, while extraordinary, made them a target. When Liora was eight, a demon slaughtered her entire family, leaving her orphaned and alone in a world that feared her. Sent to a Christian-led orphanage, she was persecuted for her abilities. The nuns and priests there, unable to understand her gifts, punished her for being "unnatural," calling her a witch and blaming her for things she had no control over. The cruelty she endured during those years only deepened her compassion, as she understood firsthand the pain of being misunderstood and judged for things outside of her control.
As she grew older, Liora left the orphanage, but the trauma from those years never fully left her. Determined to honor her family’s legacy, she became a wandering psychic medium, using her abilities to help others who were dealing with loss, hauntings, and spiritual unrest. Along her travels, Liora became a trusted guide for those in need, known for her soothing presence and her unshakable dedication to aiding the lost souls she encountered.
Despite the horrors of her past, Liora remains steadfast in her belief that people are inherently good, and she strives to help them heal. However, her past has taught her that not all spirits are benevolent, and she has faced countless demonic forces that threaten the safety of the living. When those evildoers cross her path, she takes swift and decisive action, utilizing both her psychic abilities and her combat training to bring them down. Her empathy extends not only to humans but to the spirits she encounters, as she understands their grief, regrets, and sorrow. This allows her to help both the living and the dead find peace, though her path is often fraught with danger.
Liora’s love for humanity has led her to form deep, lasting relationships, though she has struggled with her own sense of worth after everything she’s lost. In certain verses, Liora later marries Henry, a fellow hunter and someone she meets on her travels, finding solace in the love they share. Through her journey, Liora remains an unbreakable force of light, always fighting for what is right, yet never forgetting the gentle nature that defines her. Her past is filled with shadows, but she walks forward, determined to heal the world—one spirit at a time.
ABILITIES & SKILLS.
Mediumship: Liora can communicate with spirits, guiding lost souls to the afterlife or providing messages from the other side.
Empathy: Liora can sense and absorb the emotions of others, making her an expert in reading people and situations.
Exorcism & Spiritual Cleansing: She can purify haunted places or banish malicious spirits and demons, using both spiritual rituals and psychic power.
Combat Training: While Liora is a healer at heart, she is also trained in hand-to-hand combat and can defend herself when necessary. She wields light-based weapons (often blessed or sanctified) to battle dark entities.
Energy Manipulation: She can manipulate psychic energy to create barriers, healing pulses, or even weapons to fight off evil forces.
Spiritual Vision: Liora has visions of past, present, or future events through her connection with the spirit world, though she must often interpret these visions with care.
Liora’s blend of gentleness, strength, and unyielding moral compass makes her a unique character—a beacon of hope in a dark world, yet one who understands that sometimes, in order to protect the innocent, the darkness must be fought with fire.

Exhibition Text: Winnie Truong and Shanie Tomassini at Patel Brown
“That which is above is from that which is below, and that which is below is from that which is above” is the long-form version of this show’s title, and time has seen its abbreviated form become an oft-used expression. Its source is The Emerald Tablet, a text considered foundational for medieval alchemists. Alchemy is the forerunner of modern chemistry, and also an apt metaphor for artmaking: Artists infuse ordinary things with profound meaning by recontextualizing them, or by taking raw material and with it creating something great. All of this is both a kind of transmutation (alchemy) and transformation (art). Easily interchangeable to the flouter of nuance, the more considerate type will note that each word has its own identity. “Transformation” and “change” may be lexical twins for instance, but the former suggests improvement, while the latter can veer in any direction.
This difference is significant, particularly where the art of Winnie Truong and Shanie Tomassini is concerned. When it comes to the natural world, a focal point for both artists, change takes the shape of devastation, one accelerated by human crowding and the fatal negligence of the few who stand wobbling at its top. It requires denial or real acceptance to continue making art under the psychic duress of that reality. Truong and Tomassini are noble practitioners of the latter. While their works evince beauty, they also manifest gloom; and it is in the site of their imagination, and in the obvious force of it for both of them, where opposites are reconciled and get translated into something singular.
For her dioramas, Truong envisions herself as a kind of other-world botanist. Perhaps it is still this world, but it is certainly not the same one. The dark, hazy glow of each diorama’s lighting—blood reds, black-ish purples—can suggest doom, but this strange flora is nurtured and somehow blooms despite it. Tomassini also uses parts of this world, as foraged objects or subtle references, and transforms them into allusive sculptures. She collects rocks, many from a defunct mine near the ghost town of Gagnon, and partially buries them in wet grout shaped like mutated butterflies (or Rorschach ink blots). It’s unclear whether or not these winged insects are from this world or, similarly to Truong, are part of another version of it.
There are also obvious references to the human form: for Tomassini, a brain and a humanoid are covered with bursting sprouts; for Truong, hands—possibly human, possibly plant-hybrid—weave through the flowers she conjures with artistic precision. All these evoke speculative works of fantasy and science fiction, of which the best are both extrapolative and imaginative, and of which both Truong and Tomassini’s art patently share. Somehow with the pain of our world’s bleak changing there is hope in their work, and there is care. “[A]s all things were from One” shortly follows the aforementioned quote that begins this text, and it’s true, but only the self-honest really know this: That which happens to the earth happens to us, and that which happens to us happens to the earth.
